Helpful Sewing Tips: For Everyone- Cosplayers and Non Cosplayers Alike

The Purpose For This Blog:

For this blog, it's for anyone that's a total newbie in the cosplay world or in sewing in general, or if someone is stuck somewhere and needs some help, along with other tips on how to handle different sewing situations. I'll give you some helpful tips how I handle some situations that I've encountered myself. You learn new things every time you get behind the sewing machine.

Tip: Creating A Size

When you purchase a desired sewing pattern, you expect to have larger sizes, like XLarge. What happens when you don't see the size XLarge for the pattern and you desprately need and want this pattern? It turns out that I needed this sewing pattern for a cosplay that I was creating for an upcoming anime convention, but I needed a size XLarge and the pattern itself only went up to a size Large.
Well..... it turns out that I had to actually CREATE a size for myself. It's not really hard or anything, but it does require a lot of concentration. Here's how to create a size:

Step 1- If you're creating a shirt/blouse/jacket/vest, then you measure your chest/bust. If you're creating shorts/pants/skirts, then you measure your waist and hips. Make sure you write down what measurements are what.

Step 2- You then measure each edge from the Medium size to the Large size. Whatever measurements you come up with, you then transfer those same edge measurements to the outside of the Large size pattern. You do this throughout the whole entire pattern pieces that are required to create your desired clothing. Make sure you mark your outside measurements for your desired size with a dot.

Again, it requires a lot of concentration so be paitent^^;

Step 3- When you completed all of the edges of your pattern peices, you should have plenty of dots, literally outlining the outside. Using these dots as a guide, drawing with a pen/pencil, you actually "Contect the dots" by carefully copying the curves and lining of your pattern pieces. Here, you're creating your desired size.

Step 4- If your pattern pieces barely overlap each other, then that's not a big deal. You lastly take tracing paper and place it over the size that you created. You may have to piece together mulitple sheets of tracing paper in order to make sure that the size fits.

Once done, you then trace your created size onto the tracing paper. You lastly cut the pattern pieces on the tracing paper you just traced over. Make sure you lable your new created size.

I promise you, I had to do this for a pair of Luiguire shorts for a cosplay outfit and it turned out great, fit wise^o^
